PEMANFAATAN EKSTRAK REBUNG BAMBU BETUNG (DENDROCALAMUS ASPER) TERHADAP SEL CANCER MCF-7 SECARA IN VITRO

Abstract

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that grows in breast tissue. Breast cancer is treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. However, chemotherapy drugs can cause harmful side effects the body, such as hair loss, bone marrow suppression, drug resistance, neurological dysfunction, and cardiac toxicity. Therefore, alternative medicine is needed using herbal plants, such as bamboo shoots betung (Dendrocalamus asper), scientifically containing several phytochemical substances with anti-cancer. This study aimed to determine the cytotoxic effect of bamboo shoots on MCF-7 breast cancer cells in vitro with several concentrations. This type research was an experimental study using MCF7 breast cancer samples. The test was carried out using the Microtetrazolium (MTT) assay method to measure the growth-preventive effect on MCF7 breast cancer cells. The anti-cancer potential of bamboo shoot extract could be known. The results were obtained in the form of the level of effectiveness, the amount of concentration and the magnitude the IC50 value of the extract of bamboo shoots betung. The results showed that the section of bamboo shoots of Betung had an average absorbance of 7.81 ppm (0.9475), 15.62 ppm (0.8772), 31.25 (0.8621), 31.25 ppm (0 8621), 62.5 ppm (0.8212), 125 ppm (0.8245), and 250 ppm (0.8872). The study results concluded that all concentrations of the tested extracts of bamboo shoots were proven to have the ability to inhibit/kill MCF breast cancer cells with an IC50 value of 1,419 m. It is due the presence of flavonoids in bamboo shoots, namely Triterpenoids which were proven to kill cancer cells.
