Abstract

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) patients in the recovery phase often experience prolonged muscle weakness, which can lower their life quality. Physical exercise can help improve muscle strength, but no specific exercise protocol has been recommended. This study discusses frequency, intensity, type, and physical exercise duration to enhance muscle strength in GBS patients. A systematic search was conducted on PubMed,Cochrane, Embase, and hand-searching on Google Scholar using the keywords "GBS," "physical exercise," and "muscle strength." The inclusion criteria were publications from 2013-2023, full-text articles in Indonesian or English, subjects being GBS patients undergoing physical exercise interventions, outcomes related to muscle strength, and designs: controlled trials, case-control studies, case series, and case reports. From the systematic search, one study was selected from 18 studies, and six articles were identified through hand-searching, resulting total of seven studies. Muscle-strengthening exercises can improve muscle strength and should be supported by cardiorespiratory training, gait training, and balance exercises to facilitate recovery. The frequency ranges from 2-5 times per week, while the intensity varies and should be tailored to the patient’s capacity. The duration was 20-60 minutes, with the intervention lasting 6 weeks-1 year. These findings are based on recent studies. Limitations include the lack of control groups and relatively small sample sizes (4-30subjects). Muscle strength also may improve due to natural reinnervation. GBS patients are advised to engage in muscle-strengthening exercises, cardiorespiratory training, and functional exercises with frequency of 2-5 times per week, at low-to-moderate intensity gradually increased, 20-60 minutes per session, with 6-12 weeks intervention duration.
