Abstract

One of the injuries frequently experienced by runners is Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) which affects 54.5% of runners. This study aims to evaluate and assess the effectiveness of the IASTM technique, Tens acupuncture model and functional training program on pain index, joint range of motion, muscle strength, and leg length, and functional activity. A case study was conducted in Surakarta, 29 September 2023 on an amateur runner with Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) using physiotherapy methods in the form of IASTM, TENS acupuncture model, and a functional training program in 12 meeting sessions over 6 weeks with data analysis through measurement evaluation using Numeric Pain Rating Scale, Goniometer, meterline. After being given the IASTM intervention, TENS acupuncture model and functional training program for 6 weeks resulted in a significant increase in reducing pain levels with follow up 1 silent pain 3/10, tender and moving pain 9/10 and follow up 3 silent pain, tender pain and movement pain 0/10, increased hip joint range of motion flexion movement from S: 15°- 0°-140° at follow up 1, increased to S: 15°- 0°-175° at follow up 3, increased muscle strength at hip region from a value of 4 to 5, and increased functional activity, especially when running. The implications of this research provide information on the effectiveness of interventions for ITBS, the importance of combining intervention approaches and the need for further research.
